Larranaga Leaves George Mason To Coach University Of Miami

Apr 22, 2011 1:10 PM

After 14 years at George Mason, Jim Larranaga has accepted the head coaching position at the University of Miami.

George Mason athletic director Tom O'Connor said Larranaga called Friday morning to say he accepted Miami's offer.

Miami officials declined to comment. Larranaga will replace Frank Haith, who left after seven years to become coach at Missouri.

"In all honesty, the university can only go so far with finances," O'Connor said. "We think we put together a very, very attractive financial compensation package. We couldn't compete with an ACC school, a big football school with its budget."

Hurricanes' Reggie Johnson Declares For Draft Without Agent

Apr 12, 2011 10:17 AM

Reggie Johnson declared early for the NBA draft, but will not sign with an agent.

"The chance to play in the NBA is something that has been in my mind for a long time – since I was really young," Johnson said in a statement. "Now the chance has presented itself so I can see where I stand. If it doesn't feel right, I know I still have the opportunity to return to play college basketball."

The 6-foot-10, 300-pound Johnson was UM's leading rebounder and third-leading scorer this past season and shot 59.1 percent from the field.

He earned All-ACC Honorable Mention honors during the 2010-11 season.

University Of Miami Courting Amaker For Head Position

Apr 12, 2011 10:13 AM

Miami officials flew to Boston on Monday to meet with coach Tommy Amaker, according to the Miami Herald.

Amaker, a former Duke player and Mike Krzyzewski disciple, led Harvard to a co-Ivy League championship and missed the NCAA Tournament when Princeton hit a desperation shot in the playoff.

Amaker appears to be UM’s top target in the search to replace Frank Haith, who left last week for the University of Missouri.

The offer is said to be roughly $1.1 million for five years.
